Back into the interactive realm

March 9th, 2008

I’m quite surprised as to what’s been going on over the past couple of days with what I’ve been doing online. From sitting around working on this rather lengthy website redesign for work to not even having time for living a somewhat “normal” life, I’ve been off of my game. Ever since I’ve decided to delve into this whole area of being interactive, I’ve been having on and off streaks of motivation and inspiration. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely have interest in continuing with this area, but I can’t seem to just find the time to do it least keep up with all the readings. But hey, why reinvent the wheel, right? I’m not one to blog about the latest feature and try and get the latest news out, but I DO need the time to actually read half of the stuff that’s coming down the pipe and scope out the new applications and sites that appear on the Internet.

But doing social media isn’t just my thing to do. I’d love to start getting back and improving upon my design and development skills. Just simply being aware of Photoshop and Dreamweaver isn’t enough these days. There are days when I wish I can just sit around and improve upon my Flash skills and perhaps delve in other areas like learning Adobe Premiere and even other programming languages. Hell, there are times when I’d like to just simply redesign my own website. But with all this shtuff going on, these things just seem to come in as lulls over the course of the month.

So right now I’m rather infatuated with what’s going on online. I’ve been blogging somewhat regularly with different posts, doing some flash work, and hopefully this momentum will continue. I need to make some extra efforts with this stuff.

Gearing up

March 2nd, 2008

So while out on the town this morning, I again stopped by Borders to check out what books they had. I took a slight detour beforehand and stopped by CompUSA where they were advertising 80% off all their stuff. In case you didn’t know, CompUSA is closing all of their stores so when I walked in, I wasn’t surprised by the lack of inventory. They had been doing this sale for the past few weeks so now they were down to the last two days and the shelves (or lack thereof) was rather empty. I left and walked down the street to the Borders and my intention was just to read through some of the books and kill some time before heading over to the gym.

‘Lo  and behold, a book naturally caught my eye. It’s The Digital Photography Book: Volume 2 written by Scott Kelby. Of course I consider myself a decent photographer, but by all means do I think of myself as an expert. Hell, nothing could be further from the truth. Besides, what’s listed in this book is quite informative and I’m actually glad to have bought it. It tells you the “step-by-step secrets for how to make your photos look like the pros’” There are pretty intricate tips that you can take for wedding shots, traveling, and all the other things to make you a better photographer.

So I get home and naturally now I need to figure out what to get for my upcoming trip. What do I do? Well I hop online and skim through FredMiranda.com, look up lens pricing on B&H Photo & Video, Amazon.com, and any other place I can think of. Found some stuff and I’m surely going to be broke after buying all the stuff I want….but what exactly do I need want to get?

  • Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-20mm lens
  • Canon 50mm lens
  • Supreme Flash Diffuser
  • Vertical battery grip
  • More batteries
  • More compact flash memory cards

Well I guess it’s time to figure out what’s essential. Need to get some dough first…

Sunday blogging

January 27th, 2008

Did you notice that today was rather warm here in the Mid-Atlantic? I totally can’t believe it. At first I thought it was just warm in the house because the heat was on, but when I left to go run some errands, the car took bloody long to warm up. I swear it was like 30-some degrees in the morning and then after noon it got pretty darn warm. By the time I was heading home, I had to row down the window just to cool down! Pretty soon I’m going to have to turn on the air conditioning!

CompUSA is closing! Well I happened to stop by there and now they’re practically giving things out for about 25-40% off! Yeah, well there aren’t that many good things left, but if you need a laptop or computer, they still have a few items there. Don’t try and get a digital camera or camcorder though…but it’s not as if I’m going to get something there anyways because the best places are probably at sites like B&H Photo or Amazon. So I stopped by and picked up a CD burner for my computer. Yeah,  that’s right. I bought a CD burner. How draconian, I know…but my poor computer still needs one. Apparently it’s possessed. The CD-ROM doesn’t want to open when I want it to and I need to jimmy the damn thing open before I can insert it. I’ll probably go back there since they have some RAM on sale - not sure exactly what kind of RAM I use, but I know that CompUSA has DDR2 RAM there and I think that’s the one I bought last time.

So I stopped by Target afterwards and picked up some DVDs. A few months ago, during the season premiere of Family Guy, they did a spoof of Star Wars and it was hilarious. So naturally Seth MacFarlene released it on DVD. Entitled Family Guy: Blue Harvest, it’s only about an hour long, but they had a set with director’s commentary and a digital copy that’s for play only on computers. Not sure exactly why that’s there because if you have the DVD, you can play that on any computer and stand-alone player. Hmm…so I paid about $10 more for that extra copy then? Or maybe it’s for the 3-D glasses and the playing cards? Crap…well that’s $10 going to fund the next season I suppose. I’m always wondering whether I should buy DVDs at Target or Wal-Mart. They both have cheap DVDs (in price, not quality). The Wal-Mart over here doesn’t seem to have a huge electronics section and Target always seems to carry the latest stuff. But Wal-Mart is sometimes less expensive by about a dollar or so. Go figure…so I wound up buying The Departed and also Dreamgirls. Hey, I hadn’t seen the entire movie yet so now I have. All the movies that I got are really good. I could have bought the entire Godfather trilogy too for $10 each! Wow…talk about a bargain. There are a few more that I wanted to get, but I should really be saving my money.

Finally got back to the gym after several weeks of slacking off. I think the last time I went was in December. I’m getting so fat…but I like to justify it by saying that I managed to go after a bunch of New Year resolution folks started dropping off. Okay, maybe not, but I did see a lot more folks at the gym today, but I guess it’s because it was Sunday? I dunno…but I’ll need to get myself back to the gym more. Totally not meeting my New Year’s resolution though…

Good Pau Hana

January 26th, 2008

Last Wednesday after work, a bunch of us went down to this hole-in-the-wall place called Rocket Bar down on 7th Street, NW. It wasn’t that bad of a place and they even sold hot dogs there! Yeah, you could go there and have beer and hot dogs, priced separately. The dogs cost about $3.50 a piece…a little too pricey for me as you can get a hot dog and soda for $1.50 at Costco.

So anyways,  it was some good fun with plenty of Yuengling, Dogfish, Wine, and Rum & Cokes. The party really got out of hand at the tail-end of the night. We had this guy who sat down next to us who apparently wanted to meet some new people, but we weren’t buying it. Nevertheless the fun continued with talking about politics, office talk, and other random conversations. Good fun. Need to do that again…

The world is slowly going downhill

January 22nd, 2008

So what’s the deal with all these wordly events going on that’s screwing with people? You have people assassinating former leaders of countries, the presidential debates have quickly gone from civil to hostile at times - and have you noticed we’ve had a bunch more debates than in previous years? Oh, and who can forget about this insane weather that we’ve been having here. From sunny weather to hellish cold…the environment is seriously pissed at us and we need to change it soon. Oh, and what’s going on with the damn economy? We’re in a recession? Wow…and who didn’t see this coming and tried to so something to prevent it? Now we’re on the edge of this national issue that we’re going to throw money to the taxpayers and hope to avert some damage. Is anyone paying attention to this?

So the Giants and the Patriots are going to the Super Bowl. Upset central in the NFL and also in college sports. Now we have massive layoffs in different companies (like Yahoo) and mortgage crises that’s screwing folks out of their homes. What’s going on?
