I have a bitter taste in my mouth

January 2nd, 2008

So tonight was supposed to be sweet, but wound up giving the people of Hawaii a bitter taste. We came into the game confident that we’ll give Georgia a run for its money, but alas, this was not to be the night. I’m not embarrassed at the score or that we lost. It would have been great if we won, but you know, the SEC is a tough conference and any team we could have played would have given us a real run for our money. Sure, I’ll admit we had a pretty easy schedule, but UH did have a couple of hard games on our schedule - in our comparison. And it’s not as if we’ve screwed anyone out of a bowl bid. Frankly, Georgia wasn’t pissed at us, but rather they were angry at the fact they were passed over for the BCS championship.

But anyways, went to the Sugar Bowl tonight and it was hella packed. Walked through security and got stopped because they thought the Sony Cybershot 717 camera was a video camera or a camera with a detachable lens. Uh, okay, so I take it out of the bag and show it to the lady at security. You look at it and tell me if it looks like it’s detachable. Well after a few minutes, I managed to get it passed security and found my seat. Sure, I had the 500 level seat, but it wasn’t that bad. It was REALLY good seating and using the 717 camera zoom, I think I got some good shots. I’ll post some video that I have from there on YouTube eventually.

But for now, the game was not even close, unfortunately. We did score a touchdown in the second half so that was rather refreshing. It’s alright though…first chance at a BCS game so we made some achievements. Sadly the score wound up being 41-10. Good job Warriors…thanks for a great season.

Update (1/2/2008): Perhaps fitting of the people of Hawaii, at the end of the game, the UH marching band led the ~15,000 contingent of UH fans and supporters in a rousing rendition of Hawai’i Ponoi and the playing of the UH alma mater. Truly a good way to cap off a GREAT season. Go Warriors!

Exploiting the UH bandwagon & counting down to the biggest game EVER.

Warrior Football book

So of course being in New Orleans, this is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you might as well take advantage of it and that’s exactly what the university is doing over here. Nothing wrong with that. Hell, I’ve already spent probably close to a thousand dollars just being here - probably exaggerating, but the point is nevertheless the same. So they have all this UH apparel for sale, like t-shirts, long-sleeve sweaters, jackets, hats, visors, jerseys, etc. and also are banking on the whole UH fever to sweep through the city.

So I went to the Cajun-Warrior bash at Generation Hall last night and saw a book that I heard was pretty good and it was autographed by June Jones. The name of this book? Hawaii Warrior Football: A story of faith, hope and redemption. It’s about the journey of the UH team since Coach Junes took over and how it rose to even greater prominence after a losing season before June and the awesome turnaround after. It cost $40 and I didn’t know whether or not I wanted to pick it up. Sadly I left the party without picking it up, but I did find it later on, but to my sadness was not the autographed version I saw the previous night. Those had all sold out. But I guess I settled for having the author of this book, J. David Miller, sign it. Should be a great book…I’ll read it when I get a chance, but if you happen to come across this, then you’ll enjoy it. Yeah, just get on the UH bandwagon already….hehe…

So the game is set for 7:30pm tonight. There’s a fan jam set today at 4:30pm so I’ll be partying it up again leading up to the game. The great folks at UH gave out fans and ti leaves for folks to snatch up and use to support the Warriors. And of course I succumbed to Warrior fever and got some merchandise as well. You know, it’s hard trying to avoid buying all this UH merchandise. I’m going to be so broke after this trip…

New Year’s Eve in New Orleans

January 1st, 2008

So I spent the New Year in New Orleans and the past few hours walking around through the French Quarter and frankly my legs are killing me.

My flight from BWI to Orlando went really well and I managed to get a lot of sleep seeing that I only slept about 3-4 hours that night and unfortunately overslept, but still managed to make it to school on time. However, the damn thing about Southwest was that my connecting flight out of Orlando to New Orleans was delayed because of inclement weather from its point of origin. After it all, I wound up finally reaching NOLA around 1pm. What to do once I’ve checked in? I hit up the hospitality suite and luckily got my ticket to the Cajun-Warrior bash over at Generation Hall. Got “suckered” into joining the alumni association, which is pretty cool and then wandered around the French Quarter seeing all the folks in green, red, and black.

Wound up going to Cafe du Monde to pick up some beignets and waited in line for about 15-20 minutes before finally getting to place my order, picked it up, and headed back to the hotel room for some relaxation. Passed by Jackson Square and saw some street vendors performing break dancing and that caught my eye for a while so I enjoyed the performance and even have some video that I took.

Anywho, got back to the hotel, logged into the computer, downloaded my photos and videos off of my SD card, uploaded some of the videos onto YouTube, and got ready for the New Year’s party at Generation Hall. The party was pretty sick. Saw Mufi Hannamenn, June Jones, Robert Kekaula and other local favorite folks. Good turn-out capped off by the great performance by Kapono and his band. Truly unbelievable and plenty of pictures and video to share the memories.

Be sure to check out some of the videos I’ve been taking on this trip. Hopefully I’ll be able to post more on YouTube, but that’s there for now. The Sugar Bowl is tomorrow so I’ll be having more photos and videos to post. Woohoo…hurray for being social!

Beginning the road to the Sugar Bowl

December 31st, 2007

While I’m delayed in getting to New Orleans from Orlando, FL, I thought I would post an interesting vlog of my journey thus far. Not much excitement, really, but thankfully Orlando has free “unsecured” wireless Internet so I can do this social media stuff, right?
