Does anyone notice anything weird about this website?

November 19th, 2007

Does anyone notice anything funny about this website or is it just me? Michael Vick, former quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons surrendered earlier today to begin serving his sentence for cruelty and neglect towards the dogs he had…he pled guilty to dogfighting. But when you go to the website on a local CBS affiliate (CBS 46), there are banner ads all around the story…and let’s just say you gotta love contextual ads in these circumstances.

Michael Vick begins his sentence

Check out the top banner and the one on the right-hand side. You might be lucky to see the entire screen if you go here.

Is there such a thing as gym etiquette?

November 13th, 2007

I heard that there was such a thing as gym etiquette, but I’m certain that these things aren’t regularly practiced by a majority of people that hit the gym. I think I’ve encountered a few and by all means, I’m not innocent of committing these crimes, but I still try and be considerate of those around me. Actually, let me google “gym etiquette” for a sec and see what comes up…

typing…

Well what do you know, there are some guidelines on how you’re supposed to “act” while at the gym. Now by all means is the gym NOT supposed to be all full of decorum or anything, but these things should be done to avoid making you look like a rude idiot that everyone hates to be around and annoy people - you may not think so, but you’d really start to look like an @$$ if you think you do this but don’t care.

  • Return the weights: Yes, this is probably a big thing that I’ve encountered. After someone’s done using their weights and you hop onto the machine, are you pissed to find that you can’t find the weight you’re looking for only to find it on the other side of the room where it has no place being? Well the person who did that is an idiot and shouldn’t be using the equipment if s/he can’t take care of their stuff.
  • Don’t drop the weights: Keeping in line with the whole free weights things…please don’t try and be all macho and show how buff you are and drop the weights. We all can see how much you can bench and lift so you don’t need to be an idiot and drop the weights - if they’re that heavy, should you really be lifting ‘em?
  • Don’t hog the machines: Please don’t sit on the machine and talk to your friends while other people are interested in using them! If you’re done with the machine, step off and let someone else use them. If you really need to sit, then sit on the floor by the wall. The gym is NOT for social outings…do your work out and move on. Have a seat at the little cafe in the gym and talk story there.
  • No cell phones: I can’t tell you how painful this is for some people. You’re at the gym to work your muscles, not to flap your jaw. Turn off your damn cell phone! I had this stupid lady on the ellipticals next to me yesterday yapping on her cell phone while I’m trying to do my cardio. What’s wrong with this picture? Is there a reason why I need to hear about your dinner conversations while I’m trying to concentrate and watch the tv on the wall while listening to my iPod? Turn it off! Leave it in a locker!
  • Smell Good: Yes, this is truly key…I can’t tell you how often I’ve been to the gym and working out next to guys with BAD B.O. and when I say bad…I mean bad. I’m sure that the word “deodorant” hasn’t crossed their vocabulary in a while, but please when you go to the gym, be sure to wear some so you’re not offending other folks. A smell can ruin a person’s concentration and really affect their workout, not to mention that they might just be pissed off at you and result in some bodily injury.

Here’s a quick way to lose your job.

November 9th, 2007

So obviously there are many ways in which you could lose your job, but this one probably is rather absurd and harsh. Deep down I think it’s a good thing because it’s a terrible habit. What am I talking about? Smoking. That’s right…a Florida company has dictated that it has the legal right (and apparently their lawyers feel the same way) that they can refuse to hire someone and/or fire someone simply because they smoke. Not just during the work place and on the job, but in their private lives. So if you’re a smoker, don’t even think about applying for a job at this place. Is there actual case law on whether this is true discrimination? I think that there may not be…would it be considered as sexual discrimination? Age discrimination? Gender? Sexual orientation? Racial? I don’t think that there is a legitimate policy in any state or federal government that requires companies to hire folks even if they smoke.

I think that everyone has the right to work and do what they want. Personally I hate smokers…they stink and frankly I don’t want them to help contribute to my demise…I can take care of that myself, thank you very much. But what’s weird is that they won’t even provide any services to help these people quit smoking. They won’t even give them a chance to go into any tobacco cessation programs - you’re either hired or fired is what it comes down to. They were talking about this on the radio on my drive into work today and one of the DJs brought up the point about where will it end? Will it continue with those individuals who are overweight/obese? Will it bring up the whole point about profiling about who you really want to work in your office? Blond hair and blue eyes?

Apparently this Florida company isn’t the only one to do this as if you go online and Google “smoking discrimination jobs” as your keywords, there are some stories that could show up that shows it happens around the world, not just in the United States. Makes you kinda think twice about what you’re doing in the privacy of your house, huh?

Have you ever forgotten to put the seat down?

November 8th, 2007

A young nine-year-old boy from Iowa apparently kept forgetting to put the toilet seat down when he was done so this talented & gifted kid came up with the “Privy Prop” for the toilet. Interestingly, the whole concept is designed based on the trash cans with the step that you press to open the trash can lid and release to close it. I think this is an interesting thing, but are we, as Americans, THAT lazy that we need a non-autonomous device to help us put the toilet seat down? I think the kid is a genius for thinking about this, but if it goes into mass production, why would anyone buy it? To make your life THAT much easier and to help trim the amount of seconds in the day you spend putting the toilet seat down? It just takes 1 second to put the toilet seat down!

Okay, before I make this a blanket statement, let me be clear that I understand that there may be those with special needs that this invention would be great for. The kid has possibly helped paraplegics or those with other disabilities and that is truly commendable. But for us regular folks who are just too lazy to do something, this might be a little bit ridiculous…
