Just when you’d like to go hit the gym…

June 14th, 2008

I wanted to go to the gym today - it would have been the first time in several weeks - but when I got there, I noticed that some fire trucks had pulled up and apparently the whole place had been evacuated. There seemed to be some sort of power outage at the gym. I looked through the window and saw that the machines were all off. No lights were on and everyone had walked out of the gym. Quite strange how this timing occurred when I arrived. Maybe it’s a sign that I’m not supposed to be going to the gym today?

“Kung Fu Panda” kicks butt in the theatres.

June 8th, 2008

Yesterday, I decided to head down to the local mall to check out the morning showing of “Kung Fu Panda” starring Jack Black. I knew that it was an all-star cast, but didn’t know how big the cast was. Michael Clarke Duncan has a role in the movie, along with Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogan and James Hong! You bet your bottom dollar that this movie is going to be “awesome”.

The plot? Well this panda (Jack Black) plans on being a kung fu artist and dreams of fighting alongside the ferocious five. The main villain is Tai Long who seeks out the dragon scroll which will give you unlimited power. The heroic Panda, Po, is chosen as the “Dragon Warrior” and comedy ensues which ultimately leads to Po’s acceptance and heroism, or at least we hope so.

The animation on this movie blends a cartoon with Pixar-type quality production. I really liked the action sequence and it was really well put together. This is definitely a family-friendly movie and the humor isn’t adult-like. Fun for all ages and a highly-recommended movie. I think I’d actually go get this movie when it comes out on DVD.

The Samsung Glyde isn’t all it’s cracked up to be

June 7th, 2008

I went and bought a new cell phone yesterday. My Motorola KRZR was giving me problems in the past couple of weeks and on Friday, the damn thing simply shut down. I had tried to make some phone calls, but the thing wouldn’t process the calls and when I tried to reboot the system, it simply became stubborn and wouldn’t turn on. So I went and bought the Samsung Glyde…and it sucked.

It’s a nice phone and if you like cool design, then go get it, but if you’re trying to find the proverbial iPhone “killer”, then this is probably not the way to go. The touchscreen is nice, but if you get a phone, shouldn’t it be easy to figure out how to use the damn thing? The touchscreen feature wouldn’t register pressure on the screen. I had to hit buttons like “Back” or “Home” multiple times and found it extremely difficult to access the web browser and other options around the phone. If you click on the center of the screen, you get the main menu, but if you click on the button explicitly labeled “main menu” on the touchscreen, then you’ll get an abbreviated menu. What’s the difference?

I like how the screen is the entire width of the phone, but Samsung needs to go back and figure out how to make it easier for regular folks to access their information. I think it also has to do with Verizon’s data system…if you upload your e-mail account into their VZ plan, it doesn’t seem to reconcile with your web mail account. I’ve typed out an e-mail in GMail online, but didn’t see it reflected in the email web browser. It just doesn’t seem to be working out for me…and so I dumped the phone and got a new one!

With all the technical glitches and inconveniences, I think that Samsung needs to go back to the drawing board. The Samsung Glyde looks awesome and has a good camera, nice display, but what it lacks is in certain functionality, which will screw people over. So save your money and wait a while until the Glyde is released in a newer version (whenever that’ll be). The TV commercials don’t do it justice.

No electricity makes me a dull boy

June 5th, 2008

So last night was sorta a bad storm here in the mid-Atlantic region. For the first time in at least a couple of years, the power in my house went completely out. I saw the lights flicker and then *poof!* no more electricty. The television, phones, and computers all went off. Luckily I didn’t have anything important that I was working on that was lost. I managed to stumble my way upstairs to my room to get my blackberry so I could still find something to entertain myself with, but to my amazement, the storm had also apparently knocked out the cell towers so both my blackberry and cell phone had low signals - basically rendering me isolated from the rest of the world.

So you can imagine how my night went…the power went out around 8:30pm so I found a way to entertain myself by just laying around and looking at the ceiling and then before I knew it, I was asleep. Fun night, huh? Was thinking about also going to the gym after the power went out, but I didn’t know the extent of the outage and my gym is quite close-by. Perhaps they have an emergency generator and could have kept me entertained? Who knows…

I need to find more non-electric ways to entertain myself next time.

The reason for hope

June 4th, 2008

This is one of the reasons why I love Barack Obama. Just listen to him give his speech and you’ll understand how passionate he is when it comes to this country and his policy. Yes, he’s a great orater, but wasn’t Ronald Reagan as well? So don’t tell me that he should be a lecturer or on the speaker circuit. He’s running for the presidency of the United States, dammit…so let’s get rid of the douche bags in the White House and start changing the way we look at this country! Yes we can!
