“Forbidden Kingdom” is good for the kids, but not your typical kung-fu movie

April 20th, 2008

So I went to watch “Forbidden Kingdom” today since it just came out on Friday. I think it was a pretty good movie, but there are some things that I’d like to point out. The Washington Post had said that this is a movie where Jackie Chan is basically like Eddie Murphy - playing multiple characters in the movie and he doesn’t do that remarkable of a job. Don’t get me wrong….I like Jackie Chan and his movies, but the way that this movie was done…I’m not too enthralled by.

Starring Jet Li and Jackie Chan, it centers around this boy who lives in Boston and goes through some trouble and finds a mysterious staff that belonged to the “Monkey King” back in old China. This kid is a kung-fu fanatic and thinks he knows everything about martial arts. So somehow he’s transported back to old-time China and the adventure begins. He encounters Jackie Chan’s character who utilizes Drunken Boxing style and they form a troupe to escort the staff to the Monkey King trapped in heaven by an evil immortal warlord. They eventually meet up with a monk played by Jet Li and of course you’re going to see several parts where kung fu happens.

There were some pretty cheesy parts of the movie especially with the kid and one of his compatriots talking about family and other parts of the movie dialogue parts. Believe me, these segments just seems out of place and were in to fill space.  The martial arts scenes look cool, but you can tell a lot of it was done on a green screen…nothing like the traditional martial arts movies that you’d see coming out of Hong Kong. Overall the movie is a family movie. Nothing you’d expect like in the Matrix fight scenes. Kids will probably get a kick out of it when they see all the cool scenes and the plot is something that’ll entertain them.

But for the regular folks….if you’d like to see this movie, I would recommend seeing it now, but only seeing it once. I doubt that it would be good to have as a DVD so you could probably skip this one. However, if you want to see it, then go see it. Beware of during the weekends as chances are, you’ll have kids sitting behind you or next to you talking about the scenes during the movie.
