I’m tired of all these debates

Date February 26, 2008

I know that every state has their own rules on when they need to have their primaries, but do we need to have all these debates? Tonight was the 20th debate between Democratic candidates Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama. People have a right to hear from the candidates, but does it honestly have to be about the same thing every time? They’re all talking about healthcare (same response), the Iraq war (same response), the economy (same response), etc. It’s getting tiresome at some points. But alas, I must admit that even though I’ve grown tired of all this trivial bickering, these debates are like a bad car accident - you can’t do anything BUT watch….and that’s what I did tonight. The fact that there wasn’t anything good on TV didn’t help either.

Tonight’s debate wasn’t that informative. As I expected, the moderators, Brian Williams and Tim Russert pounced on the whole news about Clinton’s rage over the Obama mailings that accused her of not having universal health care and her stance on NAFTA. I didn’t watch the entire thing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the candidates were questioned about Ralph Nader’s entry into the foray. I’m starting to think that these debates are turning into mini-series with people being able to pick up where things left off each time.

And as expected at the end of the debates, the moderators asked for “closing statements” and the candidates both gave a little song and dance and sang kumbaya all the way to the credits…you know…it’s the part where they say “It’s been an honor campaigning against so and so…” You can basically time each segment with an egg timer.

So I wait for the results on next Tuesday and hopefully with the victors of Texas and Ohio along with Vermont and Rhode Island, a new nominee will emerge and we won’t have to deal with these “petty” debates.
