Blaming someone else for illegal street racing

Date February 18, 2008

I am absolutely sympathetic to the tragedy that occurred in Maryland this weekend with the deaths of 7 young men who were simply watching an illegal street race along Indian Head Highway. But what I’m having a hard time understanding is the fact that the parents of the victims are seeking justice from the car that hit the crowd, even though it was not participating in the street race.

Sprinting along the street on Friday night, a vehicle approached at a speed of about 50-70 mph. Unfortunately it veered out of control and plowed through the crowd. What’s amazing is that the parents want THAT driver to be investigated. Yeah, that’s probably a good thing, but why should that driver be the only person investigated? In case you didn’t know, street racing is illegal so why aren’t you more adamant to looking at the racers? Parents are just naive and don’t think that the driver who caused the tragedy isn’t the only one to blame. If your kid is standing around on the highway one night participating in something illegal and is killed as a result, the fact that someone caused their death negates the fact that something illegal went on? Give me a break!

I’m sick and tired of people who say their loved ones were innocent when they weren’t totally free from what’s happened. Take responsibility. It’s a piece of crap when you say your kid was shy, innocent, quiet, blah blah blah and then did something horrendous because of some sick reason. You’re just being stupid. But this situation is rather strange. Believe me, I am not trying to lessen the emotional turmoil these parents are going through, but rather the issue.
