Going through the motions
January 28, 2008
Are you watching the State of the Union tonight? It’s on right now on the major television networks (NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, etc.). It’s pretty much the same old stuff. The word is that President Bush is going to rehash all the old battles that he’s waged over his 7 years of office and try and force Congress’ hand at backing him up.
So the State of the Union begins with Bush walking into the House of Representatives and receiving a pretty nice round of applause by the entire chamber. The shouting and hollering in support of the president seems to come mostly from Republicans and those few who still stand by him in his declining days. He begins and seems to be a little bit more jovial at first before becoming more serious during the last half of the speech. The cameras pan through the crowd of legislators and there was this one part where Bush says something and all the Republicans stand up but the other half is still sitting. The chamber is practically divided in half between Republicans and Democrats. Still, there are times where Bush is saying stuff that all parties agree on, but only in ideals - like immigration, stem-cell research, etc.
Take a look at the replay of the State of the Union (if it ever makes it on YouTube or on TV later on). A lot of the legislators, including Vice President Dick Cheney and the Speaker of the House are busy reading a brochure of the State of the Union instead of listening intently to the leader of the country. It definitely seems that they’re all going through the motion.
I bet you that by the end of the speech, Bush will go through the crowd, shake some hands, sign a bunch more autographs, maybe kiss some guy or girl on the cheek, and wave a few times. Yeah, I got this down pact. Good job Bush…great speech…everything we’ve heard before but now you’re just doing some light housekeeping in the last year of your presidency.
